What's Actually Happening in Cerritos This Summer

For roughly forty years, the answer to "what are you doing Thursday?" in Cerritos had a default. You packed a blanket, walked into Heritage Park before seven, and let the Island Stage handle the rest. The City has announced that Concerts Under the Stars will not be held during the 2026 summer season. That single line reshuffles the summer for a lot of households, and if you have not been paying attention to what filled the gap, this post is for you.

The short version: the free-lawn-concert habit is on pause, but the paid indoor calendar three blocks away is deeper than it has been in years, a new Wagyu barbecue opened on 183rd, Tokyo Central is moving into the old Pacific Sales, and Heritage Park itself is a construction site. If your muscle memory says "Thursday, Island Stage," you need a new default. Here is one.

The CCPA is doing the work the lawn used to do

The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts is running its heaviest late-summer slate in recent memory, and the calendar is set up so a resident can pick a night without leaving town. Free parking, walking distance to the Sheraton and its restaurants, 1,850 seats.

John Legend as a season opener is not a small booking for a room this size. The address is 18000 Park Plaza Drive, and if you have not been inside since a wedding or a school recital, the room is worth a walk-through on its own. Tickets are sold through the CCPA box office and its official site.

If you want the lawn feeling back, the closest substitutes are outside city limits. Cypress runs Summer Concerts on the Green at Civic Center Green, 5725 Orange Avenue, and it has become a favorite for local families. La Palma holds Thursday evening concerts at La Palma Central Park Amphitheater, 7821 Walker Street, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Norwalk runs its own Concerts in the Park series through its Recreation and Park Services department. All three are within a fifteen-minute drive.

Heritage Park is under construction, and that changes the July 4 map

The other reason your usual Thursday plan may not work: the park itself is mid-renovation. The City broke ground on the Heritage Park Play Island renovation in March 2026. Walking paths, the duck pond, and open green space remain the reasons Heritage Park stays busy on weekends, but the play structures at the center of the park are not the same experience they were last August. Check signage before you promise a grandchild anything specific.

The bigger civic moment lands July 4. The 53rd Annual Let Freedom Ring Celebration runs Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Cerritos Civic Center, 18125 Bloomfield Avenue, with activities from 4 p.m. and the fireworks show at 9 p.m. at Cerritos High School. The formal ceremony and bell-ringing sit at 6:30 p.m. Two logistics notes that catch people every year:

• All-day ride wristbands must be purchased before the event, per the City. They will not be sold on July 4.
• This year's celebration also commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, so expect a longer program than usual around the bell-ringing.

What's actually new to eat

The dining shifts this summer are concentrated in three places: Plaza 183, Cerritos Towne Center, and the mall.

Plaza 183 and 183rd Street

A new Wagyu barbecue restaurant, Chubby Cattle, recently opened at 11203 183rd St. in Plaza 183. This is the same Chubby Cattle group whose earlier concepts drew lines in the San Gabriel Valley, and the Cerritos build is a full-service Wagyu BBQ format rather than a hot pot room. Cerritos Towne Center

Tokyo Central/Marukai is set to open at the former Pacific Sales site in Cerritos Towne Center, as previewed during the mayor's State of the City address in June. For families who currently drive to Gardena or Costa Mesa for Japanese groceries and prepared food, this is the largest quality-of-life change on the summer calendar. It reduces a weekly errand to a five-minute drive.

Yelp's Cerritos hot-and-new list in April 2026 read, in order, Urban Feast, Palbang Seolleongtang, Ribs & Pork Belly, ThreeSuns, and Jumunjin. Palbang is a seolleongtang house where the broth is unsalted and a dish of sea salt sits on the table for you to season it yourself, which is worth knowing before you take a first sip and assume something is wrong. Seapot, a conveyor-belt shabu shabu and Korean BBQ concept, is coming soon to Cerritos. If you are the household member who plans birthday dinners, keep that name on file.

The mall is functioning as a summer living room again

Los Cerritos Center has quietly rebuilt its evening draw. Anchors now include Apple, Nordstrom, Zara, MAC, and Lululemon, alongside Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, North Italia, The Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, Sandbox VR, and Harkins Cerritos 16. Harkins is running Summer Movie Fun through July, and the New & Noteworthy roster this year includes Molly Tea, known for their Fresh Milk Tea, Snowy Whipped, and Fresh Oat Milk Tea series, plus Best Sellers Gelato and gorjana.

The mall's larger story sits behind a construction wall. In 2026, Dick's Sporting Goods announced that it would open one of its large-format House of Sport concept stores inside the former Sears, with a target of late 2027. That is not a summer amenity, but if you have been watching the shuttered anchor and wondering, the answer is now on record. The House of Sport format includes a climbing wall, golf bays with TrackMan simulators, and HitTrax multi-sport cages.

A Saturday, mapped

If you have out-of-town family coming and you want a low-effort day that shows off the city as it actually functions in July, this is the route that works right now:

1. Morning at the Cerritos Farmers' Market. The market runs every Saturday morning near the Civic Center area, and it is the single easiest way to introduce a visitor to the neighborhood without narrating it.
2. Mid-morning at the Cerritos Library, 18025 Bloomfield Avenue. The library rotates exhibitions of artwork, fossils, and cultural objects on Main Street, in the Local History Room, the Children's area, and the Multimedia area. Guests always underestimate this building.

What this summer says about Cerritos

Two things are true at once. The city's oldest free-summer tradition is on pause, which is a real loss for people who built a July routine around it.
